About Candlewicking:
Candlewicking is a form of surface embroidery that traditionally uses an unbleached cotton thread on a
piece of unbleached muslin. It gets its name from the nature of the thread, which very much resembles the wick used in a candle.
Motifs are created using a variety of knots and satin stitches. Subject matter is usually taken from nature, flowers, insects, etc.
Other traditional motifs resemble PA Dutch or colonial designs. Modern designs include colored floss embroidery with the traditional
white on white stitching. -- As taken from Wikipedia.com
Other sources say:
Because of restrictions and prohibition, American women developed techniques of embroidering on plain
woven fabrics with the only material available - candlewicks. A new art form was created. New modern threads and materials are now
used, but the creativeness of these women lives on.
Candlewicking is also known as whitework. The use of white on white embroidery using French
knots and other stitches.
I began doing candlewicking in high
school for 4H. It is something I really enjoy doing and would like to share it's beauty with you.
